Important things to remember!!
- Use only Qualified people and a recognised trade association member**
- Ensure the therapist is fully insured
- If the therapist is properly qualified, a full medical history should always be taken prior to any therapy.
- If your patient is going to receive therapy, ALWAYS check with your GP or hospital consultant first
- Complementary therapy CANNOT cure cancer, but has been proved to help with relaxation and increase well-being
- Don't be confused about Alternative therapy, this type of treatment or process is used as an alternative to cancer treatment.(It remains unproven, and we cannot comment on its merits)
Please contact us if you require details of your nearest therapist or center. Lots of carers drop in venues offer free therapies to carers and cancer patients. If your going private please do check the therapist from a reputable source or friends or relatives that can give you some feedback on the services offered. We have our own in house therapists who can offer various types of therapy and are all qualified by National or International Vocational Institutions.
**You don't need a formal qualification to provide therapy! A foot massage for example is not the same as having reflexology. Their are many other therapy's we have not listed here as the list would be to long.
Many of these therapy's are recognised by the NHS/Hospices etc so if in doubt ask about them at a carers drop in. In the majority of cases you will have to pay for these services.
Some local colleges run courses and if your on certain benefit you may only have to pay a booking fee. We have qualified therapists within our group and we run certain events throughout the year which are all free, check back regularly on our news section
Alternative therapies for cancer patients is a difficult subject and not held in high esteem by the medical profession. We at Carers in Cancer don't have any specific view on the pro's and con's of such treatment. However we do support the right of every person to have their choice! something not always granted by Health Care Professionals who will try to offer the best clinical outcomes, these may not always fit into what the person who has cancer wishes.
As a carer, you may end up in the middle of this conflict with opinions of your own. Talking with your loved one may be the best outcome while respecting their wishes, this assumes they are able to talk, which is why if they have been diagnosed with terminal cancer its worth talking about it early enough.
Religious beliefs may also be a factor in choosing any type of therapy for you or your loved one. We do believe that if its at all possible you find someway of relaxing and taking time out for yourself. This helps you and more importantly your loved one, fatigue and tiredness can really affect your own health
