Older Carers: Have you looked after someone with advanced cancer and had some difficulties because you have been or are an older(60+) carer.

Nottingham University is running a research programme for a year to find out difficulties older carers have. They would like you to share your own personal experiences. This research is being sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support.

Venues in York, Nottingham and Scunthorpe are being organised for dates in early July for you to attend a day workshop. Travel expenses will be paid along with respite care for your loved one if needed, along with overnight accommodation for you if travel is difficult if you are a current carer. Due to the open nature of the workshops it is not advisable for you to attend if you are recently bereaved possible within the last year or so. If your a previous carer in your late 50's and would like to share some of your experiences the research team would love to hear from you even if you cannot attend in person

For further details please contact us, we will help as much as possible with travel arrangements, expenses are paid by the University.

York 2nd July

Nottingham 5th July

Bereaved Carers. If you are recently bereaved, please do seek support. The Samaritians are there 24-7 if you need to talk to someone, the weather may be adding to your isolation.

Community Equipment Loan Stores! It isn't really a secret but surprisingly not many carers know about this service. If the person you are looking after has some difficulties in and around your home. Devices such as commodes, hand rails, toilet seat raisers etc can all be supplied on loan( **They must be returned after use) This is an NHS service which can be accessed through Occupational therapy units, your GP or Hospital Consultant. The same if you need a wheelchair or you have other difficulties with your loved one, it is a sad fact that sometimes cancer can cause disabilities as well.

Changes to carers credits and pension qualification. Carers can often loose out when you are caring full time for your loved one. 30 years continuous working is now the qualification mark which means you can have breaks(caring) in your working life to qualify for a full state pension. New Carers credit sets out the benefits and more details can be viewed on www.dwp.gov.uk web site or download the information leaflet.
