When you apply to us,we must ensure you can manage some of the work as it may get distressing at times. We do not recommend anyone who has lost someone to cancer recently become involved for at least a year with some of our jobs, but you will be most welcome to apply for others, all help offered is gratefully received. We will have you CRB checked at our expense and free training is provided. Full membership is available after 6 months but we appreciate you may only be able to give limited time if you are still caring for someone or working full time.
Volunteering can be very rewarding, helping someone by supporting them can be as little as a chat or a friendly ear, many carers cannot discuss how they feel to the person they are looking after as they do not wish to burden them down with their own problems. Macmillan Cancer Support offer support groups like ours free training on a range of subjects, all designed to help support someone with cancer or those affected by cancer. Old or young it doesn't really matter, the important issue is for the carer to feel supported and listened to in confidence about a range of issues.
Volunteering can also help you with career prospects as well. Apart from some formally accredited training courses we provide, many employees look at potential candidates for jobs, at people that may have done some sort of voluntary work, all we ask is for you to give as much or as little time as you can on a regular basis.
Free Training: When you join the group full training will be provided and in some cases after 6 months further more advanced training is available to help support those affected by cancer. Please email us for an applications form, references will be required and a full enhanced CRB check at our expense.
